Hello!
I just started with Gentoo on a Sun Blade 1000 (1x Ultrasparc III 750Mhz) and was not able to boot with a vanilla 2.4.28 kernel (once it stopped after finding the disk with a Cheetah Error Trap, the second try with a smaller kernel configuration crashed right at the start of the boot process ("Red Alert") and I wonder if there is anyone out there with a similiar machine and a running kernel configuration I could use...
I managed to boot from harddisk by using the kernel coming with the live cd (with runs fine also), version 2.4.27 ... I am now trying to build a "sparc-sources" kernel (2.4.27r3), but I thought that a vanilla kernel should work, too....
Anyone any hints?
Thank you !
Kind regards,
Heiko
P.S.: This is my first post and if I did something wrong , please let me know. Sorry for any problems I may cause!

This morning I wanted to boot my Gentoo installation from the harddisk using the live cd kernel (I did this several times yesterday) and got a "Cheetah Error" saying "Unmapped error from system bus" right after the loading of kswapd ...
Starting the same kernel from cdrom works fine. I am a little bit puzzled, as this is my first Sparc system (not my first Gentoo) and I was not aware that it is so complicated to make it boot from harddisk.
Is anyone out there who can tell me what this Cheetah error thing is all about and why it happens with two different kernels at two different points in the kernel startup sequence?
I will start installing Solaris 9 now, we will see how far I get with this one
Thanks in advance for any help!
Kind regards,
Heiko |

Ok, seems like I did not find the right words or no other geek tries to run Gentoo on a Sun Blade 1000 .... Here's my last try, the kernel bootup messages (see below).
Strange things are happening here. Yesterday I built a new kernel (2.4.2 and removed everything but the bare minimum. Fortunately it booted just fine and I already thought that I solved the problem.
This morning I found my Sun at the OPB prompt ("ok" - hey, nothing is ok!) and after some googling it was clear that my dumb old PC sends a BREAK on every serial port when it is power up (argh!). So I rebooted the machine and tried to install Solaris 9 on the spare part of my harddisk. That simply was not possible because I was not able to be real sure that Sol9 would not wipe out my Gentoo by using the entire disk, so I decided to create a Sun partition first (by using my already installed Gentoo). Now, when I booted Gentoo with my own 2.4.28 kernel built yesterday (and booted fine yesterday!) it crashed again at the "Partition Check: /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target1/lun0: p3 p4 p5" point.
I will try to boot with the Gentoo Live CD, but I really would like to know how to make sure that this beast is booting everytime I want it to.
No Sparc Gurus out there? Please, help me!
Thank you in advance,
Heiko

I also have a SB1000
the problem you are having is because currently linux isnt too compatible with Ultrasparc III cpus...
until better compatibility hits the kernel, on a SB1000 you dont have much choice other than solaris. I run solaris9 and 10 on mine, and it seems to be snappy and responsive, so you shouldnt get the unbearable slowness I've experienced with solaris on lower-model ultras ...
as for other OSes, not even netbsd runs on USIII reliably yet.. _________________ -Tim Smith |

I have my 1000 working fine on 2.4.27 (uniprocessor). I'll be trying out 2.4.28 tomorrow, and I'll post an update on how it goes. |

Using sparc-sources 2.4.28 worked fine for me here. You can get my config here. |

... thanks! I found out that Solaris must alter something, because when I try to boot Gentoo after I worked with Sol9 for a while, it crashes during the boot process. But if I completely power off the machine and reboot, Gentoo works like a charm.
Again, thanks to all of you!
Kind regards,

I'm trying to get my SunBlade 100 to work with Gentoo, and it seems that it freezes right after the root file system is mounted. Are any of you using 2.6? If so, could you place a link to your kernel config?

Sorry, I only tried to use 2.4.28 ... So, no config from me. Maybe someone else?
You should probably open up a new thread, 'cause this one could be overseen by some 2.6 gurus .... And, AFAIK the Blade 100 is significantly different to the 1000 model.
Please come back to me if you are not able to find a solution!
Kind regards,
