I was posting in a xfree-drm thread, where spyderous was generously helping out, and got it this far, so I thought I'd be nice and bring it to this section, where it belongs. Thanks, everyone, for your assistance.

The base issue is no direct rendering. I don't get any OpenGL errors, but it's be nice to get to use my card, and then have the processor help, rather than have my processor pump out a mean 300fps on glxgears by itself.

I can run glxgears, it runs around 300fps on processor power alone, so it appears that things work, but note in line 4
Code:
direct rendering: No

Whats in your Xorg.log?
And did you compile xorg-x11 with the "insecure-drivers" USE flag? (it's needed to build the mach64 dri, afaik) If you get an error about not enough memory while accessing the drm module in the Xorg.log, then you have to start X11 with a lower screensize. E.g: I have to run in 800x600 for direct rendering, since my ATI Rage Mobile M only has 4mb :?

Between these lines is a large block of messages about dri and drm in my log. Are you sure you compiled xorg-x11 with "insecure-driver" for the dri stuff? (the rest of log looks fine)

why not copy with scp or sftp? :)

I actually didn't :o
I'm remerging with that in make.conf and I'll try it again.

How would I use scp to copy it?

Nothing changed. No acceleration. Spyderous was, at first, certain that I had to use the atimisc driver, but it didn't work. Before I posted my log, I tried startx using atimisc, and mach64 as the driver, and neither worked. Does anybody else have the Mobility P/M that got this thing to work?

I think I might also add some of those modelines to xorg.conf so it doesn't have to scan for them.

as I agree with dgently that there should be additional lines between the following of your Xorg.0.log
Code:
(==) ATI(0): Write-combining range (0xe9000000,0x800000)
(II) ATI(0): Largest offscreen areas (with overlaps):

scp is cp with host prepended to path/file
Code:
 scp host:/var/log/Xorg.0.log ~/log_from_host.txt

see manpage

Well, I think the problem is less that the lines aren't there, and more "how do I get those lines there?" ;)

I decided to give one of the newer DRM howto's a try, and got it working :) Thanks.

I have a toshiba Satellite 30CDT with a Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x 4mb, Celeron 500M.

running 2.6.8 and xorg 6.8.1 gives me ~94fps on glxgears, direct rendering disabled (due to not enough memory at 1024x768).

for this reason i took gentoo off the lappy, but would be quite welcome to put it back on if someone would confirm a substantial rise in fps if i could get direct rendering working.
Thanks

Interesting you mention that. I only get ~200fps on glxgears, but it's strictly using my video card, and the video card doesn't render glxgears that fast, but I can play Tuxracer just fine, it runs it at roughly around 60fps or more, so it's perfectly fine.

As far as your resolution issues, did it render at 800x600 or 640x480? You're not going to play games on a 4 meg card in 1024x768 for sure. I'd try seeing if you could switch resolutions to use drm/dri.

the mach64 chipset is a piece-o-shiznet, because that card got never released with enough Video RAM. I would like to meet one of the laptop devel. people and ask them, why they only but 4 or 8MB on those Video Cards. I have 8MB in my 1GHz laptop and at 1400x1050 I get no DRI.
For me it doesn't really make a diff. cause I don't play games, but I know that some people like to play games. Besides the point that you can't get DRI to fire up because you don't have enough video ram... you should focus back and say to yourself it's a shitty video card anyway =)

I wouldn't expect a forum guru to say something like that. It's OT and argumentative.

I got mine to work, and it was worth it, even though it's only an 8MB card. It makes a difference in UT, and I can play TuxRacer, Cannonsmash, and a lot of other games. It makes a difference to me with this shitty card.

Hi. Yes, it's fun to get stuff like that working ...

One little question: when you followed the howto which you
link to above, you used the common and mach64 packages
(not the radeon package). right?

Absolutely, I have a mach64 based Rage Mobility P/M card, I had to use the common and mach64 branches. Make sure you read further down, because when he posted the HowTo, he put the branches in the wrong order. You unzip the common, then the mach64.

Good luck.

I tried the common+mach64 and everything seemed to
work (the mach64 module was created and could be
insmoded). But X would not start and locked up the computer.

Had to recompile xfree.

Might I ask which packages you used (they seem to name them
by date) and which version of xfree or xorg you use.

I've tried xorg 6.7 (6.8 won't work with ati cards) and noticed that
I get only about 55 fps in glxgears (with no dri of course), whereas
I get about 150 fps with xfree 4.3 (still with no dri).
(this is a P3 600 acer notebook)

Anyway, if you have more advice, I need it

I use xorg-x11-6.8.0-r1.

I got the common and mach64 packages about the 17th of October, so I'm guessing those were the current releases as of that date.

The kernel I use is gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.7-r14.

I get about 180fps on glxgears with this xorg release, but games run as smooth as you'd expect them to in windows with the same card, so it works out in the end. If you need to we can go through it step by step, I'd be happy to help out.

I'll have to give it another try (too bad it takes about four hours
to compile X on my notebook).

Did you have xorg 6.8 working *before* you applied the dri
stuff? Because the 6.8 x-server just would not start for me
and locked up the computer ...

I had 6.8 before I applied the dri patches. Here's what my xorg.conf looks like.
Code:

EndSection

Section "Extensions"
        Option "Composite" "Enable"
        Option "RENDER" "Enable"
EndSection

Section "DRI"
        Mode 0666
EndSection

You could probably comment out the modeline in the monitor section, and it'll just run using whatever resolutions it can get to respond properly.

I've set up xorg 6.8-r1 with the snapshots from freedesktop.org

my xorg.conf is very similar to SuperJudge's above.

But i am having no such luck changing resolutions or colour depth
even when using:
Code:
        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport   0 0
                Depth     8
        EndSubSection

would this be the laptops inability to change display size and depths, or maybe the panels horizontal and vertical properties in my xorg.conf?

That won't restrict the panel size, but it will restrict the depth to 8 bits per pixel. You should try adding similar subsections below it with Depth 16 and Depth 24.
Code:
        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport   0 0
                Depth     8
        EndSubSection
        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport   0 0
                Depth     16
        EndSubSection
        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport   0 0
                Depth     24
        EndSubSection

Then I added the "Native panel mode" line from /var/log/Xorg.0.log to my xorg.conf file to tell it what resolutions to use.
Code:
Section "Monitor"
        Identifier   "Monitor0"
        VendorName   "Monitor Vendor"
        ModelName    "Monitor Model"
        Modeline "Native panel mode"   65.15  1024 1024 1032 [wrapped from previous line]1040  768 768 769 770
EndSection
