5.1 downmixing to 4 channels

I've tried running a 5.1 test on my sound blaster live value + 4.1 speakers but only the front channels seem to work. I expected that mplayer would downmix the audio so that the center channel is distributed evenly between the front 2 speakers. I've done the following revision to my /etc/mplayer.conf file:

it helped me set up my sound-blaster live! card. In essence: I am not sure it works with alsa, I followed the directions in the above thread to remove alsa from my system and now use emu10k1 and it works perfectly with my 4speaker system...

Thanks for the tip inukshuk, but i've established that my rear channels do indeed work independently of the front ones. However, my question deals with actually experiencing content for 5.1 speakers on my 4.1 system. I followed your advice and removed alsa and emerge the emu10k1 drivers.
The movie player that I am using is mplayer, compiled without the alsa flag of course. I would like to find out what configuration needs to be done, at this point, to downmix the 5.1 stream between my 4 channels. (In the AC3 test the rear test fails completely).
