I found the best way, with a view to maybe getting more sun's in the future that are this old (i have an ultra 10), is to get a standard kvm switch and a cable that turns the ps/2 keyboard and mouse (coming out of the switch) into the 8 pin din that the sun takes. i got my stuff (both made by adder) from www.kvmchoice.co.uk. if you're not in the uk then that probably won't help but you may be able to see the stuff you need.

hope this helps

Are you saying that a PC KB and mouse data are the same as what is output by a sun type5 KB with the mouse attached?

hi mike

no, its not (and god did i find out when i set my kbmap to us :( ). the adaptor makes the changes to the codes rather than being a straight physical adaptor so, for example, hotkeys are automatically setup that the adaptor converts into sun kb codes for things like 'cut', 'paste' and 'power'.

i just thought this was an easier solution, i.e. making the switch (no pun intended) now since the kboards aren't being produced anymore (at least according to sun uk).

cheers

Recieved my U5 today, just waiting for my keyboard and mouse now. (hopefully tomorrow).

Surprised to learn it has an extra 10/100BaseT/MII network card in there, which i was unaware of.

Just out of curiosity though... with no peripherals attached, it shouldn't boot up right? i need either keyboard/mouse/monitor or a null modem cable attached?

Cheers,
-John

Generaly, if there isn't a KB attached the box will goto the serial port on the Sun boxes, at least my IPX, SS20, SS1000, and U5 all do if I don't have the KB attached.

As far as I know, without peripherals it should still boot up using the serial port as the console. You just won't see anything without a null modem cable attached. I guess that's how ppl run headless.

But I could be wrong.

Yeah, just to round things off my U5 cpu arrived a week or so ago and everythings working perfectly. Its running 2.6 gentoo right now and acting as my router. Gunna setup some more services in a bit.

Just a thought though; is it safe to replace the front case fan in these U5's? Its very noisy. I ordered a new silent one but i dont think it pushes as much CFM. How hot do these pups get?

Cheers,

Well my U5's stuffed full of stuff...

second had disk (SCSI) sort of suspended above the card slot next to the PSU,
floppy drive removed and replaced with DDS 3 SCSI tape drive
CDROM
Adaptec SCSI card
Belkin USB card
NetGear Wireles NIC

All that lot must be reducing the air flow quite a lot, and it doesn't get above luke warm round the back fan, so I'd be tempted to try it.
