As root type
Code:
XFree86 -configure

Then make what changes you want and copy it from /root/XF86Config.new to /etc/X11/XF86Config.

Well that command will probe your hardware and then generate a generic config file and place it in the root directory. If you need help from there just let me know. I do what I can to help...

There are some forum threads about installing from other os'es. The install process is basically the same except you dont have to boot from the Live cd. You make your partitions (on another hard drive of course) and follow the install instructions almost to the letter. One major difference is that you bind your current proc and dev filesystems instead of those off of the temporary Os created by the live cd. Any problems do a fourm search and be sure to include AND between words in the search box.

pretty sure the only way you can install off of another os is to have a second hard drive that you will partition and install gentoo on... Not sure if there is a way to install on the same hard drive your on right now...

freebsd has a huge manual on their website about typical unix task suck as mounting drives... Dont have any experience with freebsd myself, but i have looked over the manual a couple times...

Maybe that might help you.
