kernel 2.6.9 freezes when i unplug my usb flash drive

kernel 2.6.9 freezes when i unplug my usb flash drive

I just compiled the 2.6.9 kernel using my .config from my 2.6.8 kernel.

When using this kernel, nautilus will repeatably crash when my usb drive is plugged in and the whole computer will freeze when I unplug it. What could cause this? Everything worked fine under my 2.6.8 kernel (except the floppy drive).

I'm confused. Is it because I used the .config from my previous kernel?

Ok, when I plug it in /var/log/messages says this:

Also, nautilus crashes.

When I unplug it and it freezes, all I see added to /var/log/messages is something like this:

My previous, working kernel ouputs this (and everything works fine on this one):

Thank you, I am recompiling right now. So is this uba the new thing? Are they going to stop using the sd* devices and use ub* instead? Strange it would totally lock me up. Maybe because I had the usb_storage module loaded as well.

i'm not sure what the future of ub vs usb-storage is. uba is technically superior and will hopefully simplify things like booting from usb sticks. also, usb-storage devices get emulated as scsi, and that sort of needless emulation is frowned upon in the kernel nowadays. but, as you have experienced, ub is perhaps *too* new. once 2.6.10 comes around i'm going to get more bug reports sent upstream to help stabilise it.

having usb-storage loaded as well wouldnt have been the problem.. the usb-storage code wouldnt have been used, since ub claimed the device.

Well, I rebooted with the new kernel (that uba thingy disabled) and everything is fine now. Thank you for your help. :D
