oh, one thing: vi ... i heard a lot of names for it:
- V-I
- vee (<- in slovenia)
- (and even!!) six (as a roman 6 = VI)
and another one: i've allways (except when i use the slovene name for it) called # hash |
Funny because I haven't heard anyone pronounce it like the founder. I always say it with a short i. (USA )

I guess I say "slash e t c" even though any english speaker recognizes it as "et cetera" - it's just faster for me to say "slash e t c".
I thought it was ok to say "my sequel", which came as a relief to me because that's the way I say it.
one oddity: I am a very old C programmer and for some reason, I learned to pronounce char as "car" (perhaps the person who taught me C knew Lisp) and not "char", which still sounds strange to me.
a friend of mine pronounes the g in "gigabit" as a soft g (like Giovanni in Italian). I always say "gigabit" with a hard g like "get me out of here". he even says "Jig" for "gig" which sounds really strange to me.
I always say "gun new" for gnu but "nome" for gnome. |

1.21 jigawatts!

but saying jig instead of gig deserves a shovelbeating (christopher lloyd excluded). |

Just my two eurocents:
Finnish is my mother tongue so i pronounce acronyms the finnish way:
SSH: äs äs hoo (or 'as as haw' anglicized)
KDE: koo dee ee (caw dee ee with 'ee' as in fret except longer)
linux: liinuks, just as linus intended it, except with a shorter i.
VI: vi as in vixen
gnome: g-nome
gnu: g-noo
gnumeric: g-numeric
and so on..
irc: uhrk if speaking english, irk with an i as in tin otherwise
/etc: ee tee see if english, same if finnish, except ee is as in 'fret'
/usr: probably user if english, haven't actually tried, usr in finnish with an u like 'food' except shorter
gentoo: ghen-too (when in finnish, oo as in 'flop' but longer) |

/etc - et cetera
{ - open curly brace
} - close curly brace
^ - circumflex
GNU - new
Gnome - nome as in garden gnome
vi - sounds like eye
I only discovered recently that python/perl/etc scripts start with a sharp bang
It's always weird when that once in a blue moon happens and I end up talking to someone that actually knows what Linux/Unix is - we never pronounce half of this stuff the same way. _________________ Rich |

I'm a very young C Programmer, only 44 years old, and I pronounce "char" like "car" because it's the One Right Way...
And, I'm teaching my college Freshman daughter to do the same! :evil_laugh:

pronounce things in Cantonese of course, even English.
I wasn't able to speak clearly before my mom cut the thing under my tongue( I can't stick out my tongue out long now). Damnit, I think I've to go to have it cut again. My English sucks because of this. _________________ I am the only being whose doom

That sounds very nasty, to put it nicely... Is that normal in Hong Kong/China? |

but do you think that most kids say "char" like "charcoal"? it doesn't actually come up in conversation anymore, come to think of it. |

I'll ask my daughter if it's come up in her CompSci class yet. It's a C++ class, so they don't use chars so much...

ok, for the record, I am 52.
so do people in Germany and Holland usually say "Kar" for "char"?
I just realized, I guess, that the phoneme "cha" does not exist in German except in a borrowed word like "Chance" or combined with a preceding "s"... |

@tbg: I don´t say "kar" for "char", and I don´t know any person who does in my german hometown. Well, thats obviously not a statement about whole germany
Indeed, there isn´t a "cha" in german, but we´ve got a "sch", which you´ld spell like "sh" in, for example "shell". _________________ "The only way...to avoid moral corruption would be to have an OS that is free." Richard M. Stallman |
