I have a brother who at least used to pronounce "GNOME" as "genome", which I find rather cool nowadays. It sounds a lot nicer than than "guh-nome", IMO.
I also remember somebody who pronounced "MySQL" as "mysgli" (mysli (without the g) is a mixture of cereal flakes and bits of dried fruit, served with yoghurt and milk). For some reason I do not find that as cool... _________________ <laurentius> gentoo linux?

Here are the official pronounciation .au files on how Linus sais it.:
ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/SillySounds/
I usually go:
Lee-nooks
GNOME - njome or Gnohm (German)
Qt - cutie
Gtk - Djee-tee-kay or Geh-the-kah (German)
KDE - Kah-deh-eh (German)
prokk or protts, etzetera, user, srrts
and TEX is tech with the ch like German "ich" or "nicht"
Words I try not to say at all: tcsh, xfce, fvwm, e2fsck, ttmkfdir
Windows sometimes becomes Windoof (doof= stupid in German) _________________ Please put [SOLVED] in your topic if you are a moron. |

AFAIK:
& == ampersand
§ == section mark
0 == zero(?seems kind of easy, is that what that's supposed to be?)
{} == braces
[] == brackets
° == degree

Some months ago I've read in a faq about MySQL that the official
pronouncement of MySQL "My S-Q-L" is and not "My sequel".
This was clearly noted in the faq, but I can't find it anymore
[edit]
I've just googled for it and found this at their site:
Quote: | The official way to pronounce ``MySQL'' is ``My Ess Que Ell'' (not ``my sequel''), but we don't mind if you pronounce it as ``my sequel'' or in some other localized way.

For some reason when people say "sequel" instead of Ess-Que-Ell it really bugs the hell out of me. I mean, geez, it isn't a sequel to some summer blockbuster, it's an acronym for Structured Query Language...I don't know what it is, but it sounds like nails on a chalkboard to me and I can't even listen to someone who's using "sequel" instead of Ess-Que-Ell. I usually have to either correct them or leave the room.
I guess we all have our buttons...
Also:
.cshrc = see-shark. Haven't seen this one in the list. |

Well, the SQL language was originally developed from IBM's Sequel language. The "Structured query language" acronym was, as often in computing lingo, something that was invented later.
As for MySQL - you all have the pronounciation wrong. Really.
The "My" in MySQL has nothing to do with the english word "my". The database was named after a Moomin comic book character called "Lilla My".
Here's what she looks like: http://w1.863.telia.com/~u86302840/bilder/my.gif
And, for the record - she's evil.

There is a movie where Linus is telling how to pronounce "Linux". It is called "Revolution OS" or "The Code". _________________ "All I ask for is choice.
