excuse me if this has been discussed before but:

whenever i encounter a bug and try to resolve the issue, i find myself constantly switching between bug.gentoo.org and forums.gentoo.org. As i understand it, the former is dedicated to post information about the nature of the bug as well as info regarding solving it - the latter is more about what should i actually do to get around this...

but this distinction is not very clear - information that helps a developer to resolve the bug is also interesting for the user - and the developer might be interestet what the users already tried. what i like in the linux world is, that to some extent most users are devlopers in some way, and certainly every developer is also a user... in addition i hate the way the comments are displayed on bugs.g.o - its far better readable here.

i wonder if there is a way to join the best of two worlds - perhaps setting up the comments section of bugs.g.o as a phpBB, or to add a special thread here and import the buginformations via network on a periodic basis...

what do you think?

You've got my vote, I can't cope with bugzilla very well, and because of that I haven't posted some bugs...

Though it sounds like a good idea, I don't think its very likely. The forums and bugzilla are very different pieces of software. Merging the two would most likely be alot of work.

I agree with you kanuslupus, but at least a forum where 'normal users' can post little bugs that they found... Kind of a tiny-bugzilla :P

The problem with this (there used to be a Bugs forum) is that developers don't read the forum. Users think they have reported a bug. Communication breaks down. Report bugs with bugzilla, or conduct a campaign to convince the developers to read a bug forum.

Can't anyone 'filter' the bugs that would be posted by 'regular' users on the forums, and then post them on bugzilla?

Sure, thanks for volunteering.

Other than that I don't see bugzilla being complicated, I'll accept that it might not be appealing to some.

However, this addresses my point. Finding someone to reliably go through forum bug reports, posting them to the bugzilla site AND dealing with the developers to find a resolution is no small task. Posting a bug is only one part. In many (most/all?) cases, developers will want to followup with the reporter on said problem.

I don't think having volunteers migrate bugs from the forums to bugzilla is practical. If someone isn't willing to deal with bugzilla, then I guess waiting/hoping for someone else to report the bug will have to do.

I support such integration idea and I think there is a way how to make it with minimum effort and still useful outcome results.

When you post original message, you can choose it to be a poll. Same way, another option should "post a bug". If it is a case, some additional input fields must available, mostly the most actively used input fileds from Bugzilla "new bug" form. Whenever the comment is posted, its copy is posted in Bugzilla again.

Oppositely, when the new bug is posted in Bugzilla, the copy of its comment should be posted into the appropriate (from the listbox) forum. Whenever additional comment is posted in the bugzila, its copy goes into the same thread.

The trick I expect is a thread identification to integrate the systems. Bugzilla uses bug numbers. I think that the bug number should be automatically populated in the topic name of the thread at the moment of original posting.

The integration should be done on both sides: in Bugzilla and Forum web forms.

Thus, somebody would have to modify both phpBB and bugzilla. I've seen other good ideas dying for lack of somebody with time, capacity, and will to implement the modifications.

thats as sad as it is true, but a lot of good ideas make it - else i would write this with MSIE, or rather i wouldnt write this at all :(

and i'm sure there are enough peoply who have the time, ability and will to do this, and one or two of them might even read this forum - and even if not - hey, one can still dream a little bit - when i began with linux i would never have thought of such things like 'live-cd' or 'emerge kde' ;) - and these things would still not exist save for some guy with a strange idea...

...well - we'll see...

Nice. Maybe after you've dealt with bugzilla a bit, you'll have less issues with its interface.

axxackall: One of the key parts of of "minimum effort" includes maintaining any code changes to the forums through phpbb upgrades. That is frequently a show-stopper.
