I seem to be getting a strange problem in kdm. Basically my /etc/hosts file just has one line which is
127.0.0.1 hostname (I'm on DHCP)
I'm getting a messgae when I try and start kde that
interprocess communication failed to start.
I'm pretty sure I'm getting the same thing in Gnome as it skwaks about the hostsname and then fails to start anything.
What I see is basically a blank background without any menu toolbars, anything.

I still can't ping my own hostname, but this isn;t surprising as my ISP probably doens;t registre machine names.
My /etc/hostname file wasn't set up right so everything was all wonky.
Gracias for the assist
