I may go to a Shangai university 3 months at the end of the year :)

I've heard that mandarin is best spoken in Taipei, Beijing people have an accent.
Anyway, would be easier if you spoke english like in HK :)

Me, coming from Bergen, now how hard it can be to understand that dialect, as it is a funny mixture of both the two main dialects, plus some influence from german (as Bergen was an important trade city for the germans in the first half of the last millennium (or something like that...my history knowledge is limited).

Stavanger, though, has lots of soft consonants from the danish language mixed in with some of the peculiarities of the Bergen dialects, so it might be even harder, as there are no written clues that are easily understood as to how something is supposed to sound there :?

I myself come from a tiny island in between Bergen and Stavanger. I have to normalize my language a bit when talking to people from other parts of the country...

But I really think all three norwegian languages should be counted. Thus; three official languages. Anyone recieving a reply from any government department will recieve it written in their own language. If not, they could probably sue (but only in the US would somebody do something like that).

So tecknojunky, you insensitive clod! You're poll is not H-MES compliant!

Just in case anyone is interested by the language situation in Luxembourg. We have three offical languages. Our national language (luxembourgish) and french and german. These two latter languages also permit us to speak to people of our neighbor countries: Belgium, France and Germany. This is important for us since Luxembourg is very small and we very soon cross borders ;-)
Although English is not an official language of Luxembourg, nowadays almost everybody learns it in secondary school.

I live in GeekTown. People speak different languages depending on their taste and how much time/money they have. But most people understand and speak C. The modern/wealthy families have adopted the next generation C# and Java or their dialects. But most youngsters playing pranks or trying to hack their way around life speak Perl, Python or some other form of a quippy snappy language.

[I wont say which is the official language of the town coz I know that will start a flame war]....
