Hello,

I just got a Sun Ultra 1-hd, disk drive and net card- with a keyboard and a mouse and I want to install Gentoo on it.

But since this is a used system and I don´t know what is installed on the HD and I haven´t got a Sun monitor I need your help:
I have already a i386 based Gentoo system, so I can connect the Sun with the PC.

My question now is: How can I get the PC monitor to display the output from the Sun over the net?
Or
How can I detect the IP that is given to the Sun by the PC(DHCP server) so that I can try to log in the machine?

I think that I have to discover what is already installed on the Sun. And I have to change some boot order, so that I can begin to install Gentoo from disks.

For all helpful tips I thank you

Hi,

why don't you use a serial console? You'd need it anyway when installing something. Just unplug kbd/mouse, connect to your PC with a null modem cable (probably need a gender changer for that...), fire up minicom, boot.

The IP given to your sun via DHCP appears in /var/lib/dhcp/dhcp.leases if you're not using static IP assignment (but then you'd know it anyway  )

I just didn´t understand that: Do you mean, that I should buy a X-Terminal? My monitor cannot be connected to the serial interface and I haven´t got a X-Terminal,yet.
If I connect the Sun with a null modem cable is it possible to see the output on the PC monitor?

This I will give a try!

Thank you for the fast reply!

He means use a 9 pin null modem cable between the comps to run a serial terminal (such as TIP ) for display output

... personally, I just went on ebay and got a proper vid adaptor for $10 .....
