I will soon be acquiring an iPod (Windows version) and I am wondering if anyone has had any experience with getting them to work on Linux. I've already got IEEE1394 compiled as a module and I will be testing that once my card arrives from Newegg. So basically for anyone who owns an iPod how has the experience been for you?
So far I understand except for sumipod which currently doesn't have a version available there are only clu's for working with an iPod? Has anyone run into any serious trouble (like turning your iPod into a paper weight) with the gnuPod or syncPod or sumipod utilities?
Has anyone tried using an iPod with wine? If you mounted the iPod and told wine where to look for it it seems like that could work, though I don't really know how the software that comes with iPod accesses it (does it set the iPod as a windows drive and then access that or access directly over Firewire). _________________ Excellent.. |

Not quite the answer you are looking for ,but the latest Linux Journal has an article on the ipod file format.
It mentions sumi, sumipod and ipodclu, none of which seem to have ebuilds |

sumipod and ipodclu are commercial software ($10 from tex9 I believe) so it's not likely that we'll ever see ebuilds for those, but I'm working on one for sumi (haven't quite got it to compile yet). I'll check out the article though, thanks. _________________ Excellent.. |

I got my iPod today but my firewire card hasn't arrived yet, but I found a program which seems like it will work once I do have the firewire card. It's called ephpod and is a program which was written to use iPod's on windows before the Windows version of the iPod came out, it works even better with the FAT formatted iPod and it runs under Wine. I installed wine from portage and then installed ephpod and it ran fine, though I couldn't configure it since I don't have a firewire card yet. It just works on a standard windows drive though so it seems like if you can mount the iPod then you're set. _________________ Excellent.. |

Well linuxlookup.com http site is not replying
But basically, the author was relating the options there are with using the Ipod under linux and the different software available. Hope it comes back soon. If the direct link still dosent work, there was a link from there main page..... _________________ ___________________________________

Well, thanks everyone for the help. It turns out EphPod works quite well under wine. The only problem I have run into so far is that under linux a ? is a valid character in a file name but EphPod can't deal with it and it returns an io error when trying to transfer a file with a ? in the filename. Apart from that there have been no problems for me except that I forgot to compile support for scsi disks as a module or in the kernel. _________________ Excellent.. |

Shouldn't the iPod be a Firewire drive? Isn't there some sort of Firewire Mass Storage standard? In that case, why can't you just mount it and copy files over? The only thing that could possibly go wrong is that you copy a file that iPod can't find... |

Gentoo-ed?
Anyway, back on topic... I was considering iPods for a long time, after I first read about them. But looking through much pages of marketing crud and not seeing a shred of the word linux (except following the phrase "Not Supported" ), I decided against it.
It's good that people are still able to write 3rd party software for what I thought was proprietry hardware |

The hardware, in the way it interfaces with the computer at least, is actually quite generic. You can just plug it in and mount the hard drive under Windows, Mac OS, or Linux as a standard SBP2 drive. The proprietary part is the database of music files.
I would recommend an iPod though. I've heard about people who had problems with one of the various Linux solutions, but I haven't heard from anyone who couldn't get it to work. I'm actually quite happy with EphPod. Then again there are other hard drive based mp3 players that are cheaper which might work with linux. _________________ Excellent.. |
