|
|
hi there,
when i emerge a package, it says when it has finished 'emerging' it that:
10 config files need updating! Look at emerge-help for more info.
this tells me nothing.
how do you update the config files?
thanx

Try
I really wonder why this isn't more widely known, seriously, this is a very frequently asked question. |

Just try it. It shows you diffs between your old file and the one that came with the ebuild you just emerged, and it lets you decide whether you want to replace the old file with the new one, drop the latter, or merge both files interactively. Don't be afraid to break much trying it out, you can always just discard your changes and start over... |

How can I discard changes after they have been made? _________________ http://dhruba.name/ |

ctrl-c should do the trick... No, seriously, you can skip any individual update with "-1" at the prompt. Just look at what etc-update tells you while you're running it. |

You misread my question - I meant after changes had been committed. I am having some problems at the moment due to having overwritten files and was looking for a way to rollback. _________________ http://dhruba.name/ |

Too much honour. 'name's plate, thank you very much.

Well, thank you for clearing that up. Stupid me. How could I.
If you really need to roll back at some point, there's no alternative to keeping the .__cfg files around. But assuming we're talking about those config files you edited beforehand and that suffer from a botched update, you've surely prepared a backup copy somewhere , haven't you? What do you mean, "no"? |

Which part of "backup copy" did you not understand? |
