I installed gnome and emerged gdm, then setup the rc.conf to used gdm
it came up and has no place to enter a damn password.....
I must be missing something about this
Can someone help me out here?

What do you mean "no place to enter password"? You have to enter your username first and then press enter, and then you can enter your password (in the same box as you entered your username). If you have the face browser open, you should be able to enter the password after you click on your face. _________________ --

I should have mentioned it's gnome 2
I enter my user name and it fails right away and never gives you the chance to enter a password.

Does this also happen when using the root account? Can you run gdmconfig? Check if al files in /etc/pam.d/gdm exist on your system.
