Hmm, are you talking about the log written by the Linux kernel when you boot the machine?

If so, just type: dmesg

If you are talkning about the system logs, then look in /var/log

There is no directory called /usr/var/share/log on any of my installations so I'm not sure what jukka talks about.

i guess you didn't notice that my phrase was formatted as a code snipped, and a leading dollar sign was in front of what some strange people call a shell command... ;-)

greetings, jukka

p.s.: similar story: some people just exec a shell, others enjoy executing a president while doing the same:
Code:
$ exec "$(echo "george w. bush" | sed 's/^.* \(.\)u/\/\1in\//g')"
;-)

I did indeed see that it was a shell command, I just didn't execute it and don't see a point in making it so difficult.

Why put a convoluted command like that when the answer is simple? Beats me. Heard of KISS? And no, I don't mean the band KISS.

I know some people like to be very 1337 but that doesn't really help newbies to understand Linux.

Just my $0.02.

that's correct. but in my opinion, such an tiny 'echo|sed' joke has nothing to do with elitist behaviour, because you can see the results after two seconds. like writing 133t, which doesn't make too much sense either... ;-)

Lol, I hear you.
It's just that I prefer to give more exact answers, probably due to my job in support.

Btw, what are you doing up in the middle of the night :) Go to sleep LOLOL
