perform the following update or will it be better to do upgrade in small steps?
(just want to make sure i dont break anything )

root@glenn glenn # emerge -u world -p

These are the packages that I would merge, in order.

Calculating world dependencies ...done!

It should work fine either way, but in case something gets borked, it will be easier to troubleshoot if you're doing a few apps at a time. Might start with kdebase and work from there. (of course, kdebase will pull in most of those other apps anyway)

Of course, you're backing everything up first, right? :)

Honestly, it depends on the packages. For example, when I upgrade my desktop with KDE, yeah, it's fine to go all in one step. However, if I'm upgrading my server or installing something new, I like to do it individually because sometimes there will be instructions at the end that I will miss if I do a bunch of them.

Most of the time, I upgrade everything seperataly, because also unmerge the old package ... duno wheter emerge -u world does that ? When upgrading kde, I just enter "emerge kde-base/kde, which will install kde completely. So it kinda depends on what has to be upgraded. The system however, I always upgrade with "emerge -u system"

btw: leuk om nog een belg tegen te komen ;)

Grtz

You can upgrade but you still will be left with the old package, thats where this one comes into play
Code:

emerge clean

To state the obvious do a emerge -p clean first check to see everything is fine and then emerge clean. I have some packages like gtk+ where I need 1.2 and 2.0.3. emerge clean would unmerge the later one (that ain't nice). Well I need some cleaning to do (thkx for reminding)

Yeah I do that sometimes, forget to state the obvious. Just I have used gentoo long enough that the -p option is as natural as a debian user typing apt-get or even a gentoo user typing emerge :D
