Use abcde. emerge abcde and it will give you cdparanoia and whatever else it needs. Works with cddb/freedb. Very nice.

I just ripped some of my cd's for the first time. I tried k3b, and while it was a nice usable interface, I couldn't get it to encode the wav files into mp3 or ogg. After looking around for a bit I tried out grip. This thing is really awesome! It's a gtk frontend for paranoia and lame/oggenc. Well laid out menu, and many use full features. Try it out, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Btw I ended up trying the ogg-vorbis format and am happy with it. Same or better quality audio at 75% of the space of the mp3. And unless you have some sort of device that only decodes mp3's (car stereo, rio etc) there's no reason not to try out ogg. Every software mp3 player out there has the ability to read ogg files (afaik).

I too use grip. It has a very good ui, however I have not got cddb to work with it yet. It is available as an emerge. Just do emerge grip

Grip is excellent! I have had no problems with CDDB, and all the filenames are nice.

how does grip work under kde3...i dont have gnome installed...but it should run ok right?...anyone use rip?....ripit under bsd was kinda cool in that once you turned it loose (after a lil config of corse) it riped the wav adn converted it , so it wasnt trashing alot of space sotring the wav files to the harddrive...is this the same for grip....from wav strait to mp3 if you want?

Grip works flawlessly (or close enough) under KDE 3. It rips a wave file, then converts to an mp3/ogg/whatever, and then can optionally delete the wave before moving on to the next track.

grip is definetly the best... supports ogg... mp3... any encoder basically... and any ripper for that matter... very fast and slick frontend written in GTK (it works in any WM as long as you have the libraries you need which portage gets for you!!)

Perhaps double check your DMA settings on your cdroms and harddrives with hdparm.

Is grip-id3v2 an id3 editor? Anyone use it?

Next question. I emerged grip, but it doesn't seem to be working properly. I selected oggenc for the encoder and the files are about 260 bytes. Just as a test, I tried mp3encode, but it errored out "Invalid MP3 executable". I don't care about the invalid executeable as I prefer ogg. Any ideas?

Ignore the 'mp3' in that line. It's saying that it couldn't find the executable to encode the .wav's to (in your case) Ogg. This probably means that you haven't installed said executable. If you /have/, then you need to fix the path in the preferences of grip.

Well, the error only occurs if I've chosen the mp3codec. I get no errors when I select oggenc. The ripping goes really quickly and the files are only 230 bytes. The executeable is in the path and it is set properly under MP3 - Encoder - executable.

If you're getting small files, that definately means that the underlying utility programme does not exist or 'grip' cannot find it.

The other gotcha with OggVorbis is that 'grip' by default saves everything with a .mp3 suffix. Noatun will be confused by this and make Bruce Springstein sound like mickey mouse. You might want to change this.

Finally, my 2 cents worth on Grip. I really like it but it would be nice if you could set it to run as a background process, so that you can log out while its working.

I fixed the .mp3 issue to save as .ogg. As for the small file issue, I've got no clue why it wouldn't be able to find it (unless Gimp is poorly coded). oggenc is selected as teh encoder and the executable is set for /usr/bin/oggenc which is a working file. If I run it from a prompt, I get this:
Code:
# /usr/bin/oggenc
OggEnc v0.9 (libvorbis rc3)
(c) 2001 Michael Smith <msmith@labyrinth.net.au)

ERROR: No input files specified. Use -h for help.
Oh well, I'll just try something else.

If I try to just rip, I get no output files. Adding the encode step is what creates the 230 byte .ogg files. Using cdda2wav seems to create the .wav file.

Are you saying that no wav files are ever created?
( I think there is a setting to ensure that they are
not deleted )
if so, it sounds like some problem at that stage of the game.
Two possibilites I can think of,
1. you don't have the ripping software installed. ( check to see what grip is actually using )
2. you don't have the correct permissions to access the cd

abcde is nice, if you like commandline! And that means you can run it in the background.

It's also in the FreeBSD ports, I've been using it there. It supports mp3 and ogg.

Something wrong with ID3, but what? I have id3libs installed; installed id3 as well doesn't make a difference. Anyone else having this problem?
