I have a gentoo server with a samba file sharing server running background. I used to access the files on that server from a Win 2k machine and it worked perfectly.
But I changed the old PC for a new one running Windows XP, and I am having a lot of problems with the samba file sharing protocol. The speed has dropped a lot (it only works at a maximum of 1500 megabytes per second, on two 100Mbps full duplex ethernets), and when I try to tranfer big files from Win XP to the remote server, it usually gets hung, or it tells me the files cannot be copied because the net resource is not available anymore.
I have the TCP/IP protocol and Windows File Sharing and Windows Net protocols installed on win XP, configured the same way than in the Win 2k. The local transfers from http or ftp are at about 1.5 MBps exactly the same as the samba ones.
Could anyone help me with this? Thanks (the Workgroup is algo configured ok). _________________ Live long and prosper |

There could be various reasons for this. But first I'll ask a few questions. Have you done Start -> Run -> gpedit.msc and changed the following policy entries ....
Domain member: Digitally encrypt or sign secure channel
Domain member: Require strong (Windows 2000 or later) session key
... to disabled? I think the first can also be controlled by changing this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\netlogon\parameters
"RequireSignOrSeal"=dword:00000000
That's important. And have you ensured that any machine accounts defined on the Samba server are completely in lower case?
Other reasons might be:- You haven't applied Service Pack 1
- Bad ethernet driver. Download manufacturer's or look for update on Windows Update?
- Incorrect negotiation of duplex setting for Ethernet card, maybe related to above point? Mixture of duplex settings on an Ethernet network is bad ...
