I am having a problem trying to install Gentoo 1.4 via the 1.2 image pretty early in the game.

I am trying to download the 1.4 stage 1 tarball, and every time I start to download the system totally locks up.

Network connectivity is established. I can ping out. I can wget small .htm pages from websites. But every time I try to download the tarball the system locks up.

Any ideas? I am kind of guessing maybe it is the network card, but would that cause the system to lock up? Is there any testing that can be done to verify the cause of the freeze?

Thanks for any help.

hi,

be sure to cd into your newly mounted gentoo-root before downloading the stage-tarball.

otherwise the downloaded tarball will fill up your ramdisk (and the system will freeze)

Thank you! That is a good idea, but I am already in /mnt/gentoo on dev/hda3.

Any other ideas?

mount a /tmp [That's right /tmp, not /mnt/gentoo/tmp] large enough to store the tarball, that is usually the case with lynx. But since you're using wget, it's probably a problem with wget itself or the hardware

You could try downloading it using Prozilla (http://prozilla.genesys.ro/) to see if the problem is with wget or with something else.
