performace differences between stage 1, 2, and 3 install

After installing Solaris and OpenBSD on my ultra 5, I am now attempting to install Gentoo. Ran into a compilation problem and found out that it was due to setting the CHOST as sparc64, instead of sparc. I did a stage 1 install on my x86 machine, and I did notice a small differnce in performance when I tweaked the flags. Has anyone noticed a performance increase when doing a stage 1 install with tweaked flags on an ultra 5? or am I just wasting alot of time?

There's no performance difference between any of the stages, no matter which gcc flags you use, as long as you just recompile the whole system with the new gcc flags. I usually do a stage3 install so that I just have a running system more quickly, and when I do an emerge sync there are always a lot of new versions, so there's a lot to compile anyway, thus you can just recompile everything with your new flags. But on the other side, those performance increasings aren't that spectacular that you have to recompile everything. I mean, whenever there's an update, this update will be compiled with the new flags, so after a few weeks most of the packages should have had an update and thus being recompiled with the new flags.
