I feel like the lucky. My summer job as a systems administrator for the Macs at a design firm paid off big time yesterday as my boss decided to give me one of their extra Sunfire v100s as a going back to school present! Obviously I'm very excited about the whole thing. It seems like its a sweet piece of equipment to use and play around with.
I believe it has a fresh install of Solaris 8 on it but I don't have a serial cable to check it out with so I have to wait until I get all the way back to school and get my stuff together. Even if it does I think I'll likely do a Gentoo install on it mostly because I love Gentoo so damn much from my x86 days.
This post is more out of just sheer excitement and disbelief that I actually have this machine as well as an eagerness to say hello to the community. But I'd also like to hear if anyone has anything to say about this particular model as far as Gentoo on Sparc or just Gentoo on Sparc in general I'd like to hear it too. |

I tried installing Aurora on one about a year ago. There was no driver for the dmfe ethernet port.
All in all, it should be an easy platform to work with. I believe the support for the Davicom card is there now in the newer kernel distributions. I have one in my lab, so keep us posted on how well it goes. |

please please make sure to post success/failure to the boards...
let us know what (if any) of the on-board hardware doesnt work with gentoo....
Many of us likely would be quicker to get/suggest-getting-at-work one of these if we knew more about the level of hardware support in gentoo.. heh, most of us just cant justify the purchase purely for testing _________________ -Tim Smith |

Hey, sorry its been a while, things have been hectic at my school and there were hurricanes! (I'm in FL now)
The gentoo disk boots on the sunfire, but the ethernet does not work with it. the dmfe modules are in the kernel but the mac addresses on the interfaces come out all 0s and that whole thing basically doesnt work. No network means no gentoo eiter, so i cant comment on anything else.
I did manage to do a base install of debian, but with the same ethernet problems.
The ethernets are fine as I have solaris 10 on there running fine now. i think maybe the chipsets for the ethernets are just a little different than they should be.
I'll try again if anyone has any ideas. I mean solaris is cool, but id rather have gentoo. Thanks! |

Have you tried the experimental branch of the gentoo cdroms?
Sometimes that solves a problem like this... |

drocko: been battling this for the past week. when booting from a gentoo livecd, what i do is:
1) /etc/rc.init/sshd start
2) passwd
3) modprobe tulip
4) net-setup eth0
5) net-setup eth1
That'll get you networking.
I have not heard of ANYONE that has gotten the dmfe drivers to work. The tulip ones seem to rock though.
Also, 2.6 doesn't like to compile. I'll send you my 2.4.27 config file if you want it.
Hope it helps,
chris. |
