currently installing gentoo on my laptop from stage1

i set all my USE variables, CFLAGS, etc in make.conf then started bootstrapping. hours later, it's done. and i check make.conf and it's back to normal.

so i redo my make.conf, back it up to make.conf.bak, and restart the bootstrap. using another console i check make.conf during the process, and once again it is rewritten..

will bootstrapping just not use my USE, CFLAGS settings? is this normal?

i restarted bootstrapping again, and i'll just let it do it's thing. then copy over my backed up make.conf for emerge system later on.

i just thought this was strange, wasn't mentioned in the install guide.

The emerge of portage when config file protection is off that happens early in the bootstrap overwrites make.conf. bootstrap.sh takes two precautions to get around this: first, it copies make.conf to make.conf.build, and replaces it when bootstrap.sh finishes. Secondly, it extracts many of your important variables out of make.conf before and uses them during the bootstrap. See the source of bootstrap.sh for details.

This happens when the bootstrap process terminates abnormally. Did it?
