|
|
I'm doing a fresh install of Gentoo 1.4_rc1 soon. I will compile the 2.4.20 kernel.
I'm concerned about the EXT3 and 2.4.20 bug." The bug will only affect people using ext3 in "data=journal" mode, which fortunately is not the default..."
I have to admit I don't quite understand what the data=journal mode is.Can somebody give me a straigth answer that is it safe to choose 2.4.20 kernel and EXT3 partitions? |

I personally suggest that you stay away from Ext3 for now.
Choose a different journalling filesystem rather.
Se this thread for more information on why I suggest that.

Thanks for the reply. I have had positive experiences with EXT3 and I am still willing to continue using it if it is safe to use it with the 2.4.20 kernel? |

I wasn't aware of this bug and I am running 2.4.20 (lolo-pre4). No problems until now. But I am just waiting the release of ReiserFS 4....

Well, if you want to take the chance of data loss, go ahead and use it.

ebrostig, Don't you exaggerate? One example doesn't prove that EXT3 is completely rotten, don't you think. My question is still about the 2.4.20 and EXT3. I am under the impression that it shouldn't matter if you use EXT3 default options. Anybody got some better info? |

Hmmm.. I didn't say that you WOULD have data loss, just take the chance of it.
When it comes to the general problems with Ext3 and 2.4.20, take a look at this arcticle on the kernel mailinglist and other similar issues. Then decide for yourself if it is worth the risk.
