I set my /usr partition a little low and now it's starting to fill. When I emerged Opera, it installed the binaries, etc in /opt instead of /usr/bin/*. I was wondering if I can manually change the install dir when emerging new programs?

Offcourse it's possible, normally you can change it with a configure option like --prefix=/usr or something, but according too the FHS the opt dir is for binary packages and I don't think you want too change every single packages you want to compile. You can also put the /usr/bin /usr/lib or whatever on a other partitions and use the bind option to link them too /usr/bin or /usr/lib. But the best thing too do is too repartition, a simple cp -a should preserve all you files and attributes, you only need a seperate linux-installations / boot-cd. Done it numerous times,

I like the whole bind idea best. However, would I have to run mount --bind every time i reboot? If so, could i put it in the local.start file?

Whats wrong with repartitioning. AFAIK gnu parted will non-destructively partition a hard disk.

Minor note; it currently won't support xfs for anyone using that. ReiserFS requires a certain lib file -- don't remember what off the top of my head. ext2 and ext3 work fine, but the beginning of the partition must stay fixed.
