hi,

been trying to install gentoo.....everything was going smoothly....until

1. in stage 2, i emerge system and it starts dling anc compiling the base system.....but it stopped at "sys-devel/binutils-213.90.016" and said error and failed.... whats up with that?? but i just continued with the rest of the steps...tho i dont think the whole base system was installed

2. i couldnt initialise grub for some weird reason, i have windows xp as well ...on hda1

gentoo settings were: boot - hda2
swap - hda3
root - hda4
i was also using reiser for everything. and started from stage 2 install.
anyway...nothing is working now, and i think i am gonna try all over again...
any advice would be appreciated....tx ...especially in configuring either grub or lilo...tx

btw: my pc is a laptop - amd athlon 1.2ghz

While installing on my latest machine, I also had a problem when the system was emerge binutils. If I recall correctly my fix was simply to
Code:

emerge binutils

After that completed, I typed
Code:

emerge system

(big surprise) and the rest of the installation went smoothly. By the way, this is on an Athlon 1700+.

As to your problems with Grub, you'll have to be more specific (and I'm not sure I'm experienced enough to help with this).

also what motherboard are you using.. I had a problem where it kept failing on binutils and gcc, took me all weekend to track it down to my bios version... and i had to downgrade to a previous version..

I'm using a ASUS K7V-133 with a athlon xp +1700 i reccomend for anyone with this mother board to stick with the v 1007 bios and do not update to the v 1008 or beta 1009.

first of all pls search the forum before posting

every time you encounter an error write down the exact error messege, or nobody will be able to help you

for instanse when i was trying to emerge system binutils didn't want to build because my bios time was screwed, and a simple battery check fixed everything

as for grub, show what you have in /etc/fstab
make sure you dodn't forget to add -notail option when manually mounting /mnt/gentoo/boot and also in the fstab

and finally if you are installing gentoo 1.4rc there has been a lot of issues in the forum about using grub and reiserfs, i'd recommend using ext2 for boot

goodluck
