|

After emerging KDE 3.1_rc5 (I didn't have any KDE installed before this, I only had fluxbox) when I attempted to
rc-update add kdm default
it told me
* /sbin/rc-update: /etc/init.d/kdm not found; aborting.
Help?

In addition, it appears that
/usr/share/apps/kdm doesn't exist.
I think this directory matters as the control panel was not able to create a directory /usr/share/apps/kdm/pics as kdm did not exist. |

It is xdm, not kdm that you should add to default. In /etc/rc.conf, you'll find a variable DISPLAYMANAGER that you use to set the correct manager (xdm,kdm,gdm).
And the directory that you're looking for is /usr/kde/3.1/share/apps/kdm/pics/

Oh... am I going senile, or did we used to add kdm to the default runlevel?
Also, is there a way to get my KDE to look in the 3.1 directory instead of usr/share/apps? Cause right now that's where the Control panel is looking...

I think Debian does it that way.. at least that is what I remember and I was also confused about adding xdm for kdm when I started using Gentoo. _________________ Hey--hey how are ya? |

Hmm oh well, I've never used Debian, and I looked at the install guide which is what I remember it from and it says use xdm, so either I've had a bit of memory loss, or there is some Orwellian conspiracy at work here |

The Matrix has you...
About the directory, it is correct, but I think you can correct this using a link from /usr/kde/3.1/share/apps/kdm to /usr/usr/share/apps/kdm. |
