There haven't been any post on this subject for quite a while now.
I'm planning on installing gentoo with my Speedtouch modem, and the only solutions I found on the forum were to dl the drivers first from somewhere else and install them manually.

I'd like to know if anybody managed to do it this way and most importantly ... HOW ? Or if anybody know how to do it differently.

Maybe the 1.4 final release will be out soon and I won't have any problems to do this, but untill then ....

Thanks for answers ...

so far i havent managed to get my modem working, but ive not tried the kernel patch method, only the other modem_run method. You can probably get away without needing to use the internet atall whist installing gentoo - if you put the tarballs onto a cd then just nab them from that. Then once you have gentoo up and running configure the modem (this is probably what everybody else has said, but it probably isnt possible to install gentoo with the modem, as you need to compile the kernel for the drivers, but you first need to download it :) )

I have managed installing Gentoo 1.2 with an speedtouch usb modem (pppoa).

I started with an stage3 tarball and used the benoit driver (http://benoit.papillault.free.fr/speedtouch/user.en.php3) and it works.

So far as I remember I followed these steps:

1. Download an actual ppp tarball ( for example under Windows)
2. Download the benoit - driver (is also available in the gentoo tree)
3. Search under windows for alcaudsl.sys (you need this file for initializing your modem)
4. Boot Gentoo and mount Windows drive
5. Configure and rebuild Kernel (see Benoit installation description)
6. copy tarballs to distfiles and emerge ppp and speedtouch
7. You have to configure ppp (see Benoit installation descriptions)
8. It should work (run modem_run script and start ppp)

Sorry that I can't give a more detailed description but I can't remember  !!!
