Howdy,

I'm a little nervous about installing the nvidia drivers for my laptop as I used 4K stacks in the kernel as opposed to the 8K stacks and I've heard it through the grapevine that people have had serious issues w/ the gentoo-ized versions of the nvidia drivers using the 4K stacks.

Any advice?

Thanks!

The driver in ~x86 (I think it's version 1.0.6111) has no issues with 4k stacks, but the current stable driver does. My advice would be to instal the ~x86 driver.

You've done this and not had a problem?

Thanks!

All I found while searching the portage tree was the following:

Quote:

The only glx I see is 1.0.5336-r2

What should I be after? I have it compiled into the kernel, just need the drivers.

I think it is hard masked. do this

#ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge /usr/portage/media-video/nvidia-glx/nvidia-glx-1.0.6111.ebuild -vp

This found it for me...had to have the "=" to find the specific version...

Quote:

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge -vp =nvidia-glx-1.0.6111

Now, the only thing I'll have to do after emerging this is change the driver from "nv" to "nvidia" in my xorg.conf, correct?

What chunderbunny was telling you was to put
Code:
## Nvidia drivers
media-video/nvidia-kernel ~x86
media-video/nvidia-glx ~x86
media-video/nvidia-settings ~x86
x11-base/opengl-update ~x86
in your /etc/portage/package.keywords to install the ~x86 drivers (version 1.0.6111)

Then follow:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml

NB: you shouldn't use this driver with rivafb compiled in the kernel so if you've done this recompile your kernel without it and emerge the nvidia stuff after rebooting with the new kernel

Oh yeah, I understand how to unmask it and emerge...I just want to make sure I have all of my bases covered.

I can't have my laptop down for too long as I work all day on it, so I'm hoping it goes smoothly and I don't spend hours back-tracking to get running again.

Thanks for all the info!!

I'm in the middle of doing this, finally.

I have 32mb video ram, what exactly do I put in the VideoRam tag of the "Device" section to specify this? I'm not sure so currently I have "32000" just to be safe but I know it's slightly higher than this.

What's the equation for this? It's been so long since I thought about it.

I followed these instructions:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml

...and when I do the glxinfo | grep direct, here's what I get

Quote:

direct rendering: No
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
