What's a good divx player for linux? I have the codec installed already but I can't find a player. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough. What's good, and is there an ebuild for it?

(g)mplayer (for the "good" part)
aviplay (for the dead-easy part)
xine (never used it... I cant offer an opinion)
I'm sure other will follow with their favorite client/ settings/ preferencies and claims for the highest efficiency. The truth is you should try different stuff out until it does the job for you.

OK :)

I recommend, and use, both xine and (g)mplayer - try both, and see which interface you like better / which works the best for you, etc. As far as suggestions go, mebbe try mplayer-cvs; this now includes support for sorenson 3 videos (.mov) I haven't played with it too much, it was complaining about missing qucktime codecs last time I did, but others have been succesfull, and it's nice to be able to play the trailers from apple.com :)

If you have a large collection of divx movies and such I would recommend xine and gmplayer. Each has quirks and I've run into a number of movies that would play in one and not the other. I've found aviplay to be fairly reliable for playing divx movies if you aren't as interested in as many different options such as dvd, mpg movies, vcds, quicktime..

I'd go for mplayer, because it supports, besides divX lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots (you got the idea) of codecs! 8)

Same for me, try mplayer. and don't stick too close to the gui, as using mplayer from command-line still seems more stable to me. also some videos where gmplayer gives up (don't know why) can be played by mplayer.

Try mplayer and be sure to read the additional documentation on www.mplayerhq.hu. Especially the section"video output" has some great hints to make mplayer run faster (f.e. how to install an optimized driver for matrox cards).
If you have a matrox - try searching "matrox AND mplayer" - i have written a short docu how to enable frambuffer & mplayer when using a matrox card.

FYI, you shouldn't need mplayer-cvs to get sorenson v3 support any more. 0.90 rc1 is out and in portage, and it is supposed to support sorenson v3.

Of course it doesn't work for me.

wandering off the topic for a minute...

If you have a build of mPlayer that should support quicktime, but doesn't, make SURE you have these files in /usr/lib/win32 (the last win32codecs ebuild I tried didn't have all of them)

QuickTime.qts
QuickTimeEssentials.qtx
qtmlClient.dll

After you have those, mplayer should be ready to play your Lord of the Rings trailers (or whatever).

There are some "Experimental codecs for MPlayer" (RealPlayer and Quicktime for instance) available here: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/~alex/codecs/index.html
