Hello there.
I got an AlphaServer 1000A 5/400 server at home. - its has a Primary server and a Backup.
there is scsi hotplug, but i dont have any scsi harddisks.
I want to install Gentoo on the server, but i dont even know if Gentoo supports my alpha server.
please give me some advice on how to get Gentoo installed on my AlphaServer.
EDIT: I just saw a alpha livecd in the expermental folder on a gentoo mirror. - i'm going for it. _________________ Encrypt, lock up everything and duct tape the rest

I know that FreeBSD supports Alpha. - information about Alpha on Freebsd is also welcome. _________________ Encrypt, lock up everything and duct tape the rest |

I'd go for freebsd on alpha.
If you have any problems, pm me or send an email and I'll add you to my msn list |

thanks.
I'm trying Gentoo on the alpha server (Because i know Gentoo very well)
It took me some time to figure out how to switch to Unix console and boot from cdrom. - but i did it
I had no internet near me, so i just had to RTFM until i found the solution.
The server is.... DAMN slow, so i think i'm going for a FreeBSD when i have played a little with Gentoo on my alpha. _________________ Encrypt, lock up everything and duct tape the rest |

If you have any problems, pm me or send an email and I'll add you to my msn list | I have a 1000A 5/333 (333 MHz EV 5 CPU) and I could not upgrade to FreeBSD 5.2.1. I can't even remember why anymore I haven't touched it in so long.
This box only has Mylex RAID for disk. I did have NetBSD 1.6 on it but I had to tweak the installer before it beleived that the lv device (or something like that) was a valid installation target.
During the FreeBSD incarnation I got X working on by getting a Matrox board (I forget which one) and putting the old XFree86 3.x server on it. It supported KDE if you didn't mind the incredible slowness and the fact that the box is the size of an endtable.
I should give Gentoo a shot but I don't have much time and it would be better if I wait for winter when the heat it throws would be a benefit rather than a problem. |
