|
|
Hello, excuse if I'm incorrect - but isn't it true that the user needs to set up a boot partition for Sparc64 installs?
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-sparc.xml?part=1&chap=4#filesystems
I think the docs gloss over this (possibly critical) step. If this is off topic please lemme know.
cheers. _________________ - L202 |

Hi L202,
I'm hardly an expert but my install doesn't have a boot partition and it works fine
# cat /etc/fstab
/dev/sda2 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/sda1 / ext3 noatime 0 1
/dev/sdb1 /usr ext3 defaults 0 2
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
Cheers

Right on...thanks for the response. I'm now wondering if I'm doing the wrong thing by maintaining a boot partition. Or if it's a platform specific issue. Or, if it doesn't matter at all... Need a guru to lay down the law.
Anyway, thanks for the input! _________________ - L202 |

/boot is generally bad on any platform. |

Generally (<-- remember that word before disagreeing, I'm not saying "never") there's no need for it, and it complicates the bootloader process significantly. |

Thanks for the info - I definitely am not in a position to disagree! I'm trying to establish the best system setup that I can. I will definitely try a setup without a boot partition. I'm just bummed that I spent the weekend setting my current system up with a boot partition. Because after all...isn't the whole idea behind the Gentoo distro optimization and efficiency?
Thanks for the post. _________________ - L202 |

Well, really, the whole idea behind Gentoo is "do whatever the hell you want and we'll not try to stop you".
(Although, of course, if you go too far we won't support you ) |
