Hi everyone. New release, this patches against 2.6.8.1. Files and info are available at sourceforge.

No ebuild this time, it appears that the new version format breaks kernel-2.eclass, or so I'm told.

Thanks blutkind for putting this together, neenee and jasonf for testing. Enjoy.

I'd love to give it a try, but sourceforge has a 0 (zero) length file for 2.6.8.1-love1.bz2. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, or sourceforge is, but can't find any patch for 2.6.8.1 out there.

What nvidia problem does this address exactly? I've sure been having a few...

It fixes a compile error between mm and nvidia, so that the drivers actually compile correctly.

Thanks! I'm downloading right now.

EDIT:
The staircasetonp patch doesn't apply cleanly. It wants to remove a bunch of wireless networking stuff, including some files that are not present in 2.6.8.1+love1. WTF?

Need an ebuild to play with - can't seem to find those clear "how to patch a kernel" instructions that served me so well in the past 8O

A question, perhaps slightly off-topic... what is staircase and NP? I saw mention of these in previous threads, but didn't think to ask...

EDIT: Second question, this patches agains mm-sources-2.6.8.1-r3 or the gentoo-dev-sources of the appropriate version?

mm-sources, gentoo-dev-sources is an entirely different patchset.

I grabbed a copy a few hours ago, but was too busy with other stuff to make a reply here, so I thought I'ld do it now :)

thanks for all the work! :D

edit:
hmm I'm getting all kinds of problems with vesafb and what not... :/

Code:

drivers/built-in.o(.text+0x7d2a8): In function `radeon_match_mode':
: undefined reference to `vesa_modes'
drivers/built-in.o(.text+0x7d385): In function `radeon_match_mode':
: undefined reference to `vesa_modes'
drivers/built-in.o(.init.text+0x7315): In function `vesafb_probe':
: undefined reference to `vesa_modes'
make: *** [.tmp_vmlinux1] Error 1

I tried turning off framebuffer, but that didn't work either... :/
anyone cares to help?

hmm I fixed that one way or another... Not really sure how though. I must have done about 15 different kernel compilations, finding the right one eventually...

There is an ebuild available, just wasn't put on sf for some reason. I'll deal with that in a few.

Have fun!

The old ebuilds won't work because of the very surprising kernel version number, 2.6.8.1, because of the NFS problem in 2.6.8. The only way around that AFAIK is the method gentoo-dev-sources uses, start with 2.6.8, and then include the .1 patch in the patchset.

Meh,
Code:
Latest quick hack to the 2.6 kernel: 2.6.8.1

2.6.8.1 should never have happened if the -rc were actually what they're supposed to be aka "Release Candidates", not "we'll add a few more patches then release", its a candidate for release..

But for me it works: I just changed the name of the ebuild to 2.6.8.1-r1 :)
