Just installed Gentoo on a new hard drive for the first time and there were no special masks or unmasks. Should have been a vanilla install. Nothing was unmerged at this time. Kmail icons were not showing up. Had another box that was installed 1 week prior and Kmail icons showed up fine. Did kmail -v on both and the only difference was Qt 3.0.5 on one with icons and Qt 3.1 on the one without. Tried to remerge kdenetwork -- no better. Tried to remerge Qt and kdenetwork. No better. Tried to remerge Qt 3.0.5 and kdenetwork. No better. The error was:
Quote:

libpng warning: Application was compiled with png.h from libpng-1.2.4
libpng warning: Application is running with png.c from libpng-1.0.12
libpng error: Incompatible libpng version in application and library

Finally relieved the problem by masking libpng1.2.4 and using libpng-1.0.12-r1 and remerging all of the following in order

    libpng
    qt
    kdelibs
    kdebase
    kdenetwork
    kde
