hi, I have just installed gentoo on a system, and I can't get the X-server to start, trying to use openbox.... can anyone help?

yes. everyone could help if you would provide more info. how about: what gfx card, what kernel, what cpu, etc... ?

the kernel is 2.4.26, the gfx-card is a nVidia GeForce 3, the cpu is a p4 2.5 gHz, 256 mb ram

okay... and what about some error text you get on screen while starting x server or some output from the log?

it says unknown hostname, and stops until I press ctrl+c

did you add your hostname to cat /etc/hostname ? and do you have a ipaddress for it in /etc/hosts ?

that helped a bit, but I figured the rest out myself, I had set the vertical sync to high

i hope next time you post from the beginning as much info as possible and don't force other forum members to pull all the questions from you. remember: you need help and you asked for it. then be nice and provide the info.
