Hi,
Being a newbie on Gentoo, I was wondering upon how people generally install non standard programs on gentoo?

Before using Gentoo, I have been using RedHat for 5 years, so I learnt how to build RPMS and installed every extra app as an RPM
(this helped package management and an easy way to search for what files are contained in a particular package)

I know gentoo uses ebuilds as its package system for building from source.
Is this the best way?
learn how to create ebuild scripts, then I know that dependancies can be met and I can track the installed files & uninstall packages correctly
(providing I get the ebuild script right)

or use the usuall, configure, make and make install and guess where things went ;)

Sorry for the basic question,
just wanted to get peoples feel for their install procdures.

Mark

I personally use the configure make make install method. However, like most things in Linux, it's down to personal preference.

Well, I go for the configure-make-make install way. Sometimes you might need to go for an "independent" built although there is already in portage and some other apps might be dependent on that package. In that case, you can always "convince" portage that the app is already there using the inject method.

If you can do the configure-make-make method, then you aren't very far from creating the ebuild. See Gentoo Linux Developers HOWTO. Start off simple.

Yes, I'm pretty used to making rpms anyway, so after looking at some ebuild scripts it seems pretty easy.

I was just after some general input really.

Thanks

i like to put non-ebuild programs in /usr/local, cos none of the gentoo progams put stuff in there
