I've just installed Xfree/kde by the manual for the second time, and kde is way too slow. I've had gentoo installed in my old P3 600mhz for a couple of weeks and just did an install in my P4 1700 and my P3's installation is faster. every time I try to open programs like konsole it takes 3 times longer to load in the P4!!! I, unlike others in this forum, haven't had any problems compiling kde with xfree 4.2.1. I have even tried some things from that forum but nothing works. I also have tried to unmerge kde and reinstall it and it only unemerges kde-base. I wonder if I should just unmerge xfree 4.2.1 and merge xfree 4.2.0
please help. Don't know what to do. |

What CFLAGS do you use?
I just compiled X+KDE ona 2.4Ghz Pentium 4 and I used pentium4 and O2 as flags, nothing else. The speed of KDE is excellent (using 3.1_rc3)

Konsole takes far less than a second to load, I can't even get done saying "one" before it appears. I'm running kde-3.1rc3 on an athlon xp 1500. Surely you have missed something. |

Okay, this may be an "old school" problem that is gone in the latest Xfree86, but are you sure you're loading the right video driver for X? Using an incorrect or unaccellerated one can slow things down, even on a decent box...

Are you sure that you have DMA enabled on your hard drive on the new system? This could definitely cause the slowdown you are experiencing.
hdparm -tT /dev/hd? - to test the current speed.
hdparm -d 1 /dev/hd? -to enable DMA (then test again).
(/dev/hd? should be replaced by the appropriate disk)
Perhaps "hdparm -s 3 -X66 /dev/hd? " would also be appropriate. Check the man page on hdparm before you start trying these things, it all depends on your disk. |

KDE 3.1 has a much faster bootup if I remember due to prelinking. 3.0, which is still default takes much longer. _________________ What Larry was saying is that if you make it too easy for programmers, then poor programmers will be able to do things best left to good programmers, and will inevitably do them poorly.
