cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig
ATA/IDE/MFM/RLL support ->
enable ATA/IDE/MFM/RLL support
IDE, ATA and ATAPO Block devices ->
enable Generic PCI bus-master DMA support
enable Use PCI DMA by default when available
DMA/UDMA detected will be mostly handled by the drivers.
You could try to fiddle with hdparm (i never tried it):

I don't think he askes how to get UDMA activated, but how too compile the kernel so it activates DMA without using hdparm and thus at the start of the system.
I have the option always activate DMA, or something activated (kernel 2.5.50), but still this doesn't activate UDMA, well at startup it says DMA: disabled, hdparm fixes this later on in boot sequence. I'm though am interested if it's possible,

Having the kernel enable DMA automatically is the proper way of doing this IMO. |
