Will any linux software work on gentoo ppc linux that i download or does it all have to be ppc specific and emerged?

unfortunately, ill have to give you a shitty answer...
most will. but if it is x86 (or whatever) hardware specific (wine comes to mind), then it wont.....
but if you get the source, and its just software without any special hardware reqs.. then yes, it shoudl work...
maybe not stable though....
what are you trying to get thats not in portage?

actually nothing perticular just was curious, right now im getting the tgall PPC 64 bit linux iso and going to try a stage 1 installation. Do those ISO's boot?
im trying to figure out the CHOST settings and CFLAGS and my use variables

in answer to your original post, unless you are going to be doing anything very specific, everything that you need will be in the ebuilds, and you can set your masking to get more bleeding edge things, if you want. to install x86 only ebuilds, all you need to do is point emerge to the ebuild file.... but odnt count on it working....
what you need it the "install-ppc-universal.iso" file (the orde rmay be different, but thats the name)...
you dont need the packages cd if you are going stage 1 (good idea, thats what i did my first time too 
just pop in the cd, reboot the computer and hold "c" as it chimes.. or before... and then at the prompt type "G5"... and voila...

Im using the tgall minimal cd images cause i want a 64 bit system cause i will use mac os x for itunes and such of that nature and i just want a really fast awsome system for my everyday use

im sorry, i dont understand what you keep saying about "tgall" cd images...
what are those.. are they diferent iso's?
with a minimal cd, you have to get the tarball stage1 from the internet, and then install from that....

Regarding linux software on ppc, basically everything works except non-open source stuff where the developers do not provide versions compiled for ppc. Currently this includes stuff like:
- Flash Player
- Blackdown Java 1.4
- MPlayer windows codecs for viewing .wmf etc.
With some of those you can use qemu to emulate an x86 processor and still run those apps.
By the way, you can also run iTunes using mol under linux. |

There are open source pdf readers that work on ppc, but none of them render graphics-intensive files right |

well then what about linux games? will games work on a linux platform no matter the hardware as long as its good enough?

Since you're trying to do a native 64-bit install, i'm afraid that a bit less software will run on it than on 32-bit ppc. But probably a lot of sources will also compile and run on 64-bit ppc.
And as to games... are you talking about closed-source binary-only games, or about open-source games ? I'm afraid that you won't find any closed-source binary-only games yet that will run on 64-bit ppc. If it's an open-source game, and the code is written with portability in mind, then you can probably get it to work. |

| Honestly? I /think/ the answer is "no". AFAIK Doom3 is now available for windows/x86 and they should be releasing binaries for linux/x86 "soon". I don't know anything about a port for Doom3 to powerpc, but if there is a port for powerpc then their primary focus is definitely gonna be Mac OS X. I have my doubts that they would release binaries for linux/ppc, but that's my personal opinion, i don't have any "hard facts" about it. I think there is almost no commercial software for linux/powerpc in general. |
