I'm installing Gentoo 1.4_rc1 on an Inspiron 8200 from the livecd. I used the stage 2 p4 optimized image. After emerging the system, setting up mountpoints and whatnot, I reset. On booting from the disk, the system starts everything, ending with "Starting Local".
After this, nothing happens. There's no login prompt. I can switch to other virtual terminals, but I can' login. Any ideas? |

This thread https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=16113 states it could be due to compiling the kernel with SMP.
Quote: | After an investigation the problem seem simple.
make sure SMP is not selected in your kernel.
The boot process will hang after local if the network card is static
or after requetsing dhcp if the network uses it. |
Else it could be something wrong with agetty / pam or pam-login, recompiling those packages, could help, but I would expect an error if agetty wouldn't start.
Hope you fix it,
