It's very nice actually. And it doesn't even ask you for your e-mail address anymore

Check out this post on bugs.gentoo.org

https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51970#c21

Look at the last comment. We can't just provide an ebuild straight away. But I guess you can independently download and customize the previous ebuilds if you really _HAVE_ to get it installed now.

Yes, it does. Just playing the BBC radio using their built in player from firefox; it also works seemlessly with the standalone player.

I looked at helix previously, and it seemed quite nice, if a bit rough while it was in beta. The lack of the proper real codecs was a problem though! I've never had much success with xine or mplayer real playback, so I've been pining for my radio 4. RP10 is installed and running seemlessly; no nagware, no email address request, not even registration. Real really seem to have pulled their act together.

I used the http://varnerfamily.org/pvarner/gentoo/realplayer-bin.ebuild.tar.gz ebuild from the bugzilla, worked a treat; note fetch restrictions are on tho. Probably an idea to read the licence too.

Just want to throw in my two cents.. I installed it and it just works. I was able to jump right on CNN or zdnet and watch different videos and audio clips with out problems. I have to give a thumbs up to Real on this one!

Nice GTK gui, Mozilla plugin, xv support and everything just works :)

Is Helix Player and Real Player the same apart from the license?

Don't forget to drop (or symlinx) the plugin, nphelix.so, into /usr/lib/nsbrowser/plugins...

Hmm Realplayer10 always segfaults here. No matter if I play a single radio stream or some kind of video files. It doesnt matter if I use the plugin or the stand-alone player. Any ideas what to try?

as most streams come under realplayer or windows media player

I just installed it and it works great. But when click on a link to play a video firefox gives me this error: 'rtsp is not a registered protocl'. I copied the plugin files from the realplayer mozilla dir in to my users .mozilla/plugins dir, but still no dice. What do I need to do to get this to work? thanks in advance.

Ok, this is gonna be REALLLLLLLLLYYYYYYYYYYY LONG. So while at the Gentoo booth in LWE (where I'm typing this...), I met with Vikram Dendi, program manager for helixplayer. He talked to me about the real player 10 license issues. It seems that we need to create a test plan for Real Player 10 on gentoo. This test plan will allow us to confirm the stability of Real Player on Gentoo, thus preventing pointless hours of tech support with real player on something that should have been adressed already. I have email and aim contact for real player so I'll be working hand and hand with him on this. As far as the test plan, if anyone has suggestions on what to add to this test plan. Thanks for your guy's interest in realplayer and I hope to get this process going!

first job is obviosly more formats supported

however for realplayer the linux version is way better because its a lot lighter on resources then the windows player and the web streaming is a lottttt smoother on windows i have had cases of the streaming not being as clear and at times breaking up with latency problems with the Linux version the quality of streaming playback is superb

however as a media player especially one that i would consider replacing my primary media player Kaffiene it has to have more formats supported

dvd , mp3's playlists etc

i wouldn't mind paying for some of the features the windows version has
i prefer having less applications to do multiple jobs rather then 10 to do one job :P

for example the dvd playback in linux you need say at least 3 applications
first is a player like XINE
then a frontend Like Kaffiene (my favourite frontend by the way)
and then Libdvdcss and some kind of Plugin for Media streaming

dvd backing up is even worse then the above :P

Oh well i love linux hehe

You might want to take a look at the current FAQs for the project at https://player.helixcommunity.org/2004/unix/help/playerfaq.html

Particularly number 20:

Quote:
Q. What sound systems are supported by the player?

The Player currently only supports OSS sound drivers on install.

Matt Campbell has contributed fully functional support for the usound server (see http://mattcamp.paunix.org/usound/)

Some support is available for ALSA and ESounD via CVS for developers interested in improving the Helix framework.

No support for arts, jack, mas, etc. is available or planned for the immediate future. Community contributions are welcome.

It works great on my desktop where I'm running OSS drivers with an old Creative Labs SBLive card. But I saw the same thing you experienced when I tried it using ALSA on my laptop.

Thanks for your answer, I read the FAQ and already thought about this might be an ALSA problem, but I thought since I have the alsa-oss-compatible plugins (whatever they are named) and I can use -ao oss in mplayer for example, this wouldnt be the problem. I'll try to get rid of ALSA and see if that fixes my problems.

UPDATE: I got rid of ALSA and I'm using OSS now, but still no success. I might try the usound daemon mentioned in the FAQ, but I doubt anyone of the ppl here who use rp10 have installed it. I'm trying a different kernel now, and another suspect is reiser4.

Kay so I did that and it still doesn't work? Ever after a reboot (I went home and am now at work again) I get the same error when clicking on links to realplayer movies. Any other thoughts?

The plugin won't work for me, either. I used the ebuild posted earlier in this thread, and the symlinks are there in the Firefox plugins directory. However, when I try to open a Realplayer file (like a .ram file), it asks me where I want to save it instead of opening it in the browser.

Edit: Hm. Some Real videos work.

well some places use some kind of detection routine
they won't work
places like Yahoo
But Cnet.com works

I think the older stuff doesn't work due to its coding coz its designed to detect win32 plugins

The ebuild in the bug report appears to need a dependency on

app-arch/rpm

which is missing. Can anyone confirm that this is a real missing dependency for me? Thanks.

No support for arts

Don't forget about artsdsp.

I just got it working in KDE with

$ export HELIX_LIBS=/opt/RealPlayer
$ export LD_PRELOAD=
$ artsdsp /opt/RealPlayer/realplay.bin

*oops* spoke too soon. All I did is get it to get past the point where it was hanging on /dev/dsp. It set up the .realplayerrc file but then it wouldn't even play a downloaded .rm file.

strace shows:
Code:
kill(7328, SIGRTMIN)                    = 0
kill(7328, SIGRTMIN)                    = 0
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, NULL, [RTMIN], 8) = 0
write(6, "`pV@\0\0\0\0\0\0\0\0p\205\340B\320\2623\10\0\0\0\200\0"..., 148) = 148
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, NULL, [RTMIN], 8) = 0
rt_sigsuspend([] <unfinished ...>
--- SIGRTMIN (Unknown signal 32) @ 0 (0) ---
<... rt_sigsuspend resumed> )           = -1 EINTR (Interrupted system call)
sigreturn()                             = ? (mask now [RTMIN])
kill(7328, SIGRTMIN)                    = 0
kill(7329, SIGRTMIN)                    = 0
ioctl(4, FIONREAD, [0])                 = 0
gettimeofday({1091811522, 290499}, NULL) = 0
poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN, revents=POLLIN}], 1, 0) = 1
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, NULL, [RTMIN], 8) = 0
rt_sigsuspend([] <unfinished ...>

It just hangs forever on that last system call.

It's not even consistant. I restart it a few times and it actually displayed a few frames of the video before lapsing into a hang again.

Code:
kill(7472, SIGRTMIN)                    = 0
kill(7472, SIGRTMIN)                    = 0
kill(7472, SIGRTMIN)                    = 0

gettimeofday({1091812402, 743353}, NULL) = 0
gettimeofday({1091812402, 743481}, NULL) = 0
write(4, "\215\r\4\0008\0\0\0L\0\0\0\20\20\0\0\215\23\r\0008\0\0"..., 120) = 120
ioctl(4, FIONREAD, [64])                = 0
read(4, "_\0#\0\'\0\200\2\23\0\215\0\3\0\300\2\0\0\0\0\220\333\212"..., 64) = 64

ioctl(4, FIONREAD, [0])                 = 0
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, NULL, [RTMIN], 8) = 0
rt_sigsuspend([]

same hang.

If I abort KDE and just use "xinit" to bring up the bare X server plus twm and xterm I can launch RealPlayer 10 on that file with no problems. It's clearly an interaction with KDE, probably artsdsp.
