I'm not trying to open a can of worms here, but I see in the newsletter, that an xbox running gentoo was on display.

So my question is, is xbox going to be officially supported ?

I am aware of the gentoox port, and from what I have read in the forums here, this is not an "offically sanctioned" port. So my question is is there an "offically sanctioned" port.

TIA.

Thanks scovel,

I assume that they must have used gentoox at the show then since there doesn't appear to be anything official yet.

There is something missing: an official Gentoo response.

Your confusion might come from the Gentoo vs GentooX debacle awhile back. GentooX was an Xbox Linux project that was affiliated with Gentoo but not really supported by Gentoo, and thus developed outside the official toolset. It uses "magic" instead of "emerge" and was summarily thrown out of Gentoo not too long ago.

Xebian is a Debian port of Xbox Linux. Seems to be the best maintained and supported version at the moment (IMHO).

Gentoo seems to have re-thought their position on Xbox Linux, and seem to be supporting Xbox Gentoo. I say SEEM because its nearly impossible to find any information about it.

Did that clear anything up?

Sean

I was actually wondering more about the way garlik42 said 'thanks for the reply', when there isn't a reply there.
and then your post says 'this is his info', this is whose info? when did you start talking about a person. Anyway, it seems as though a bunch of posts between those have been deleted or something. meh

I don't see what's so special about an "xbox" port. Its an IA-32 system. You just need a kernel and the rest is regular gentoo.

True. But there are enough differances for the xbox builds to need slight tweaks to get them to run, alsa, xfree for example.

An x86 livecd won't run on an xbox, without some additional files, and tweaks.

Just about all the apps that don't interface with hardware, have built with no problems for me, so that's the same.

I guess thats why a sub arch to x86 is used for the xbox.

Just to clear this up, the second post was a sarcastic way to bump the thread.

 and ...?

Apart from an official livecd, there are already all the parts you need to use the official ebuilds [in portage] on your xbox.

I don't understand your question, "And ....?" could you possibly be a little more specific.

to answer all your questions, yes we have a semi-official xbox port

that is why we brought chris on, to lead it

the previous xbox dev, shallax, met resistence when he tried getting his xbox stuff into portage. he gave up and formed gentoox. having put so much time into gentoox, he didnt feel like merging the work back into the tree.

the xbox 'port' is just a x86 profile except that it sets the PROFILE_ARCH variable to 'xbox' ... that way when merging packages like xfree, or alsa, or whatever, we know when to apply xbox-specific patches

hop onto irc.freenode.net and join #gentoo-xbox, or sign up with the gentoo-xbox mailing list

So what all do you have to do to get an XBOX to accept the gentoo install. I have heard a lot of things are locked on the system and can't be touched. By the way, will it still play xbox games if you do this?

Aynjell - did you ever discover if your xBox would still be able to play xBox games?

I believe that it would be able to, provided that you didn't install Gentoo on the entire HDD.

I'm still trying to find the XBox LiveCD though so I can't say from experience that this is 100% true, I'm 99% sure though.
