emerge -u world --> cant startx as user

i can only startx as root... and it works... really.... but
when i startx as normal user all i get is the old splashscreen (not my nicely updated one) and no symbols, background or messages on the splash such as metacity loading,...... etc.
what could be missing? all i have as user is a hung screen (i am able to use the X- mouse though) with the ugly grey background and the splash logo of gnome.

solution: ren .xf86conf to ...old
and reboot
