Sorry I am just really fucking pissed off because my mum was looking forward to listen to the program on the radio station since ages ago.
Is there anything that sucks less than mplayer on playing radio?
I'm beginning to think Steel's leaving Linux was well justified..sorry..

Holy crap, I've been having the same problem. They must have broken something in the latest release. I did notice amongst all the packages I emerged before bed last night, a new version hit portage...maybe that fixed something.

Alas I'm having the same problem since last upgrade-missed the last day of the Tour coverage which really pissed me off. Downgraded back to old version but still no luck and I really haven't had the patience to look into it further.

petrjanda,

Its not your now it works, now its broken problem but this
Quote:

MMX supported but disabled
MMX2 supported but disabled
SSE supported but disabled

CPUflags: MMX: 0 MMX2: 0 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 0 SSE2: 0
shows its seriously not oprimised. You need to fix your USE flags.

Got hit the same way ;-)
Code:
$ euse -i
...
network               [+] [C] [L] [media-video/mplayer] : Enables network
                                  streaming support
...

A new network USE flag has been introduced.
You definitely need to update your USE flags to allow streaming and optimization.

FYI, here are the flags I use on my headless radio player:
Code:
[ebuild   R   ] media-video/mplayer-1.0_pre5-r2  -3dfx +3dnow -X -aalib +alsa -(altivec) -arts -bidi +cdparanoia -debug -debug -directfb -divx4linux -dvb -dvd -dvdread -edl -encode -esd -fbdev -ggi -gif -gtk -ipv6 -joystick -jpeg -libcaca -lirc +live -lzo +mad -matroska -matrox +mmx -mpeg -mythtv -nas +network +nls +oggvorbis -opengl +oss +rtc -samba +sdl +sse -svga -tga -theora -truetype -v4l -v4l2 -xinerama -xmms -xv -xvid
Most disabled options are there to avoid installing X. I can play the radio station you mentioned.

Since you're trying to connect to an mms: file, you should add USE="network" to optimize mplayer for network streaming.

If you're running ~x86 you shouldn't get mad when something breaks.

I always keep kplayer/mplayer and kaffeine/xine working just in case one breaks on me I can temporarily use the other (I also run ~x86).

Set the appropiate use flags? MMX and SSE are use flags for example, might speed up a lot more than only mplayer.

one should enable these CPU flags while installing Xfree/Xorg also. the ebuild shows these options but they are disabled by default. it is good idea to make best use of CPU flags that are supported.

cat /proc/cpuinfo will list all available CPU extensions. pick the appropriate ones.
