You don't have the correct driver installed or it doesn't recognise your ethernet card, /proc/pci states the pci information only, not that it has a correct driver installed or if it's working. A kernel with no extra drivers for sound / ethernet etc, would prompt your soundcard and ethernet card if you did a cat /proc/pci. Problem is with the drivers,

I tried pci-setup (and net-setup) with no success.
I think that the correct driver for my network card is the 3c90x one, but since (as I understand it) the drivers are compiled into the kernel instead of loaded as modules, how do I get them to load if it doesn't happen automatically? |

You should try:
Then after that has completed run:
From there do an:
And see if your card is now listed in the ifconfig printout.
If it is not then you may need to load the driver in yourself
NOTE: If that is indeeded the driver for your NIC. I could not find a driver for that card, but I didn't look all that hard either.
If modprobe doesn't work try insmod and if neither work, post the error's that they give here and we may be a bit more help. |

You may need to add nameservers to the /etc/resolv.conf file.

Again, only the "lo" device is in the output of ifconfig.

The module isn't found. I'm using the "livecd-basic-1.4_rc1-r2.iso" image to try to install the system. It has a message that the network drivers are compiled into the kernel. A directory listing of "/cdroot/lib/modules/2.4.19-xfs-r1/kernel/drivers/net" shows only the following files and directories:

I posted a link to the "dmesg" output in my first post. It doesn't appear that the network devices are being detected, but I don't know how to try to get the system to detect them properly because a loadable module for the driver isn't on the cd.
Are there any additional suggestions?
(Thanks for all the responses so far.) |
