Would a Sparc Station 10 with a 333mhz UltraSPARC IIi and 512mb ram be enuff to be able to watch movies and use Openoffice with some decent speed?

Or would it be better with a 440mhz with 256mb ram instead?

And is 600$ a good price for the 333mhzer? It has a Creator3D card, but no harddrive, and a pentium mmx pc card.

You mean Ultra 10? I have a sparcstation 10 and it only has a 36mhz cpu :P

Anyhow, the 333 should be enough. Having as much RAM as you can is better than a faster CPU, in my opinion.

It's easier to add ram later than swap CPU's :-)

(cheaper too!)

I'd get the faster proc in an Ultra 10.

First and foremost...$600 is really high for a 333mgz system. Look on ebay...There is little difference between an ultra 5 and an ultra 10. The only difference I've noticed is the ability to have excelerated elite3d or creator3d video cards, and space in the case. The 5's are pretty tight little machines. Ultra 5s with 333mgz procs go on ebay for about $130 (cheaper than the 10's) The PCi card (amdk6-2 with it's own memory, usb, and video card) is probably not gonna work in linux. In my experience, they don't work very well in solaris either. As for if it will be quick enough, i'm not sure. but, i'm trying a gentoo on an install on an extra ultra 5 (333mgz) at work, so if/when i get it working, i can try it for you.

If you have any questions about differences in sun machines, I manage Ultra 10, 5, 2s and one crazy Sun clone. Also, the technical manuals are available online on sun's website. I highly recommend you check that out if you're new to the hardware.
