have you done a mke2fs -j /dev/hda1 when installing?
check with cfdisk what it says, does it say /dev/hda1 ext3?
mount the /dev/hda1 /boot when chrooted into the your gentoo.
first check whats in your /boot then chechk if its mounted with mount, if it is not then remove all files In /boot then mount and emerge grub again and try install. _________________ NoManNoProblem
