|
|
I'm getting tired of XMMS and it's to the point that I either need to find another or I need to throw myself at the mercy of their mailing list to vent about the "bugs" I've found that are just plain annoying. (Oh wait, I did that and never got any replies... right.)
I actually don't have any problems with its sound output. My problems are different: still uses GTK 1, hardly supports ID3v2 MP3 tags, misses a lot of intuitive features on its own, the plugins that make up for that lack are not the best written, getting answers to any questions (plugin or otherwise) is quite a pain--despite the presence of a forum and a mailing list, etc....
So what are your alternatives? I'm looking for something that can play many file types (video too?), play them well, and that has a convenient not-KDE interface. (I'd prefer something not tied to Gnome either, but I'll take that if necessary.) Any tips would sure be appreciated! |

BMP (beepmp.sourceforge.net) is an XMMS fork using GTK 2. |

Though not totally like XMMS, I like rhythmbox.
Its like iTunes, if you've ever used it. |

If you'd really like to have it not tied to a specific Desktop Environment, I'd reccoment a curses-based frontend to music playing. I use MPC or cplay, depending on what mood I'm in. _________________ Blog.

Oh man. Foobar2000 is the greatest music player ever coded. A bit shabby looking, but under the hood it's a fscking monster. _________________ Blog.

Many bugs have been fixed (and a lot of other improvements made) since 0.9.6 was released. The latest code from cvs is a lot more stable than what's in portage. |

Music Player Deamon with Gnome Music Player Client is very close to FB2k. To get Music Player Deamon and Gnome Music Player Client do the following....
Add these to /etc/portage/package.keywords
Code: |
media-sound/gmpc ~x86
media-sound/mpd ~x86
|
Then emerge mpd and gmpc.
Make sure you read the man to MPD. _________________ veritas vos liberabit...

I like using amaroK, which is also in portage. The only (almost fatal) downside is that it uses arts for output, which is quite nasty... |

I like using Beep Media Player (the magical CVS version) because it looks better than XMMS since it's GTK2 and is lite. Good stuff. |

mpg123 is very good. There's also a mp3 plugin for mplayer. |

I don't know what foobie was like in v0.11, but mpd will still need some work...no APEv2, no mpc and I saw that you took care of getting somebody to implement replaygain, but only for oggs...guess I'll have to wait, but I like the client/server approach! I'm planning on making a Replaygain program with a gui but my C++ programming skills are lacking. But, thats why I have college and friends. _________________ veritas vos liberabit...

I'll put in another vote for MPD. Wonderful as long as you only use MP3/OGG/FLAC/AAC. Since my music collection is entirely MP3, OGG, and a few FLACs, it's perfect for me
You can grab my ebuild for kmp (a nice MPD client for KDE/Qt) here:

Replaygain? Mass tagging? Highly extensible plugin interface with amounts of plugins probably only second to Winamp and XMMS? Configurable playlist formatting?
MPD has none of these (and I would be wary of adding these types of features to a server/client model player, honestly), and its functionality is, IMO, what makes foobar2000 foobar2000, rather than its apparent general default look.
I could see MPD's use if I had a standalone media center running on my amp (which, if I ever had the time or the energy for it, would be really spiffy to implement), but on a desktop system with no real interoptability within my different systems.. it just seems a bit excessive.
As far as the topic at hand goes, amaroK is easily my favorite player at the moment, although I rarely ever use it since I can't really get used to KDE. I normally use Rhythmbox for my casual listening sessions. |

I love JuK, but I don't think it can play Internet Radio Streams. |

There are plenty of problems with BMP that will make it do funny things, however, it has never crashed on me while adding a directory of files to a playlist. Did you make sure to use the CVS version? |
