Has anyone come across this before?

I've just installed gentoo on my Sony Vaio laptop. Everything works fine so far (except sound but I'll worry about that if/when I need it) except for one thing:

When starting an application in KDE (konsole, mozilla, kmail, others...) either by clicking on an icon or going to 'Run Command...' - the system fails to load the program for about 45 seconds or so. Other programs function normally, but if I clicked on an icon, I get an 'i'm loading' flashing icon next to my cursor for a while. - Then, the application launches and everything is fast and smooth. Seems only a delay during launch.

Interestingly, VMWare launches straight away, but then pauses when I power on my virtual machine instead.

Where should I start looking for things that might be wrong? :?

Have you got your hostname set properly? And have you tried going back to the console from which you launched X (Ctrl+Alt+F1) to see if any messages appear which could help explain the syndrome? Also, make sure .ICE-unix in /tmp is owned by root.

same problem was on my machine:
after doing
Code:

emerge xfree
emerge qt
emerge ORBit

it works now.
Don't know which of them solved it.
Also have a look at $HOME/.xsessionerrors - there were some RPC timeouts, which may have caused the delays.

Hope it helps.
