I am on a mission to create a "pure" gtk2/gnome2 desktop, i.e. no gtk 1.2. Don't ask me why, but I don't want "legacy" code on my brand new gentoo system, which is part of the reason that I moved from RH. Mad props to the gentoo guys, by the way!

First of all, I assume that emerge will handle having both gtk1 and gtk2 installed, correct? I have built them manually side-by-side before, and it was a bit of a pain.

Second, has anyone else done something like this? I am finding it a bit of a pain when I want some gui tools, because most of them will merge in gtk1.2, which is a big no no. I was wondering if people could post a list of common software that is entirely gtk2/gnome2 compliant, i.e. won't merge in gtk1.2.

I currently have issues with metacity (I am a sawfish fan ... thought sawfish2 was gtk2) and themes support for gnome2, which seems distinctly limited.

Anyway, should I give up my quest and just install the damn gtk1.2, or is there enough software out there that I can use to not have to?

It's pretty slim pickings as far as gtk2 compatible apps goes. And most aren't very stable yet. I saw a (short) list of them not long ago but can't remember where now. A few are; gedit, gftp, gkrellm and some applets.

In the meantime, Gentoo uses something called SLOTS that allow multiple branches to happily coexist. If you can go pure GNOME2, more power to you and I will be proud. But you won't have much going on for a while :)

see, I am a straight up emacs guy ... I like plain vanilla vi for quick-and-dirty sysadmin stuff, but emacs all the way for development.

So theoretically, if I went on and installed gtk1.2, I could later unmerge it cleanly once the gtk1 apps move to gtk2?
